Selection Procedure

Selection Procedure

If you meet all admission requirements, you can apply for a selection. This is always planned in person and is divided into four phases. It will take a total of 3 days. These days are not consecutive but are planned separately.

  • Phase 1: The Compass test
  • Phase 2: Flight technical aptitude
  • Phase 3: The personal interview
  • Phase 4: The flight medical examination
Phase 1: The Compass test

The 1st phase of the selection procedure consists of the Compass test. The Compass test is taken entirely in English and consists of 9 tests that are designed to test the general aptitude and some important characteristics for the pilot profession.

The test assumes that the candidates have no flying experience and will take between 4 and 6 hours depending on the speed of the candidate. At this stage, you will be assessed on the following components:

Psychological examination

The psychological test is incorporated in the Compass test. This examination will consist of several questions about your personality and character. In phase 3, the personal interview, this will also be examined. The hiring committee can then ask additional questions based on the research.

Phase 2: Ability to Fly

When you have passed phase 1 successfully, we will invite you for phase 2. At the beginning of this day, you will be expected to hand in your CV and motivation letter on paper at the reception desk. Your flying skills will be tested by means of a simulator session with an instructor. 7 days before phase 2 you will be sent a document.

This document contains information about the procedures and the cockpit. You are expected to know this well in preparation for the simulator session. This will also be tested by the instructor. The instructor will mainly pay attention to the following items:

  • General flying skills
  • Eye-hand-foot coordination
  • Learning ability
  • Multi-tasking
  • Stress resistance
  • Theoretical application
  • Coordination ability
Phase 3: Personal Interview

When you have successfully completed stage 2, stage 3 will take place on the same day. This is a personal interview with two to three members of the hiring committee and will last 45 to 60 minutes. At the beginning of the day, before phase 2, you will have handed in your CV and motivation letter at the reception desk.

This will be reviewed by the hiring committee. You can compare this with a job application where the following points are critically examined:

  • Motivation
  • General knowledge of aviation
  • Psychological examination
  • Character
  • Representativeness
The hiring committee:

"We would like to see a professional and representative candidate. A good preparation and representative appearance are very important to us. In this interview, we want to find out who you really are and whether we can see you sitting next to us in the cockpit in a few years' time.

We will ask critical questions about your personality, but we also just want to get to know you through a good conversation. We hope to meet you soon so we can get to know each other! "

Phase 4: Flight Medical Exam
  • Investigation of the medical history
  • Physical examination
  • Extensive blood tests
  • Urine test
  • Heartbeat (ECG)
  • Ear, nose and throat test
  • Hearing tests
  • Lung capacity

During this phase, you will be examined at the level of 'medical class 1'. This is the level you need to start the training. Many of our students and pilots do their medical examination at Aeglia Medical Centre at Lelystad airport. However, you are completely free to do your medical examination wherever you like, as long as you obtain the class 1 medical you need for the training.

Costs

Your contribution to the selection is a one-off fee of EUR 300. The selection is entirely without obligation. This means that after you have passed the selection, you can always decide for yourself whether you want to start your training or not. There are no extra costs involved.

Because the medical examination is done externally, you have to pay for it yourself. The costs for the initial medical class 1 examination are between 400 and 500 euros. This depends on the medical centre that does this for you.
